Which Thyroid Medications Won't Leave Me Bald?

Monday, 19 July 2010 11:02 AM EDT

Question: I have been suffering from hair loss due to thyroid medication for the last five years. I know that it is the medication and not the thyroid condition itself (or anything else - I've been tested), because at one point I stopped taking the medication and within a week, the texture of my hair changed and within a month, my hair grew back. But I threw myself into a sort of "thyroid shock" and ended up in the hospital. Is there any thyroid medication out there that treats the condition without making me bald?

Dr. Hibberd's Answer:

Thyroid hormone overuse is linked to hair loss. You need your thyroid and endocrine system professionally re-evaluated. Though a simple TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone) may initially suffice, I recommend you consult an endocrinologist for further investigation and consultation.
