Question: I am a 56-year-old woman. About eight months ago my tongue started to curve to the side of my mouth. It will twirl around and around for a few seconds. I can stop it momentarily, but it will start up again. This goes on all day long and is driving me crazy. My doctor has no explanation, and suggested I see an ENT doctor, but I don't think that will help.
Dr. Hibberd's Answer:
Involuntary movements (dyskinesia) of your tongue, or any involuntary movements of voluntary muscle, need to be further investigated for underlying causes. Although disease adjacent to the involved muscle may cause problems, this would be expected to be continuous, not intermittent. I recommend you seek an opinion from a neurology specialist for further evaluation and treatment options. It may turn out to be something as simple as a side-effect from medication or supplement, but do not delay evaluation.
