Question: Do you have any helpful information on how to reverse the effects of Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome?
Dr. Hibberd's Answer:
There is no known cure for Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS), and no treatment known to reverse its effects. This is actually a group of rare genetic disorders that weaken connective tissue, especially skin, joints, and blood vessel walls by virtue of a defect in collagen synthesis.
There are several types of EDS that can range from mild to life-threatening. Treatment is limited to managing symptoms which may include loose joints with early onset degenerative changes, fragile blood vessels with rupture, and aneurism formation, cardiac valve abnormalities, abnormal wound healing and scar formation, skin that is stretchy and easily bruised, and definitive genetic counseling.
Pregnancy can be life-threatening for many of these patients, so correct classification and genetic counseling is mandatory.
