Question: What would you recommend to dissolve cataracts? I have them, but they are not big enough to have surgery, which I am scared to death of. I recently saw my optometrist and she told me there is no change in my vision from a year ago.
Dr. Hibberd's Answer:
There is no treatment available that will dissolve senile cataracts. Do not waste your money on topical treatments that will drain your wallet, leaving you a victim once again. The only effective treatment for cataracts at present is surgical removal and lens replacement. Ophthalmologists are medical doctors who are experts in cataract management and can offer removal of cataracts when necessary. Not all cataracts require removal. Ophthalmologists are the only surgical specialists you should consult regarding your cataracts.
Be sure to alert your general medical doctor to your visual dilemma, as some conditions are associated with premature formation of cataracts, and some degree of prevention or control may be possible by addressing undiagnosed underlying medical conditions.
