Question: Do you have any information about a newly discovered skin condition called Morgellons?
Dr. Hibberd's Answer:
Morgellons is a lay term, and has no medical designation for any specific condition. It is not a newly discovered skin condition. There has been a firestorm of people who claim they have symptoms of this condition. In May 2006, the Los Angeles County Department of Health stated that no credible medical or public health association has verified the existence or diagnosis of Morgellons Disease.
The current description of the disease is vague and covers many conditions. It is recommended that patients get clinical and laboratory evaluations of serious skin irritations, and not panic over unverified reports of Morgellons disease. Remember that parasitic disease is very common overseas, and is not as commonly seen in the United States. So, if you have an undiagnosed skin condition, do not self treat. See your doctor for an appropriate diagnosis and treatment plan.
