Question: I am 24 years old and have anxiety. I do not take any medications or have not consulted any doctor yet. Please suggest what steps should be taken. This is causing problems in my personal and professional life.
Dr. Hibberd's answer:
Anxiety is not to be underestimated. It is one of the most common reasons for lost productivity and disrupted personal and professional life. Medications may not always be the best initial action, so here are some initial steps you can take:
1) Talk with someone you feel comfortable with and ask what they notice about you.
2) Build in some relaxation time for yourself each day. Consider yoga, meditation, prayer, exercise (go for a run, play tennis or swim), listen to some music, or perhaps go to movie with a friend.
3) Avoid caffeine or stimulants.
4) Allow for sufficient sleep (at least 8 hours) without interruption, and consider taking some time off work to re-group or perhaps to participate in a self-help group or therapy.
If these pointers do not help, make an appointment with your personal physician for a professional consultation.
