Can Anxiety Cause My Heart to Race?

By    |   Monday, 27 April 2015 10:57 AM EDT

Question: A few months ago I started waking up at night with my heart racing, sometimes sweating profusely. I went to my doctor and had an EKG and she said it’s not a heart problem, but probably anxiety. Is it really possible it’s all in my head?

Dr. Hibberd's answer:

A “probably” diagnosis of anxiety isn’t enough to go on. You should seek out a more definitive medical opinion from a specialist or another doctor.

A single EKG has no predictive value for someone with your symptoms. Of course it is possible your racing heart is stress related, but you certainly can’t know by guessing after a single EKG.
I assume your doctor is not comfortable with this issue, so you can either go back to her and try to get her to diagnose you more clearly or change doctors.

Alternatively, you can go to a hospital ER for evaluation and referral to a cardiologist for further evaluation. This would be smarter than waiting until you find yourself in the ER at 3 a.m. with all the distress and anxiety that causes, let alone a potentially life-threatening heart condition.
