Question: I lost my husband of 56 years over the summer and have taking Lexapro to help with the depression. Will I have to take this medication for the rest of my life?

Lexapro is an antidepressant. This is usually a very well-tolerated medication both in the short term and in long-term depression management. This is not a difficult medication to have to take indefinitely, if your doctor advises so.
Most patients with their initial episode of depression will remain on antidepressant medication for 6 to 12 months,Then medication withdrawal is considered. There are some cases when extended or lifelong therapy is advised. In my experience, as long as this medication is used as directed, any extension of treatment time has been very well tolerated.
The length of time advised will vary according to your therapist’s preference, your response to therapy and your long-term wishes. Although lifetime therapy is suitable for some, it is definitely not always necessary to take antidepressant medication indefinitely. Your risk of recurrence and associated health will help you and your therapist decide an optimal period to continue with the Lexapro.
