Question: I’m 55 years old and still get acne. It seems like something I should have outgrown by now. What can I do about it?
Dr. Hibberd's answer:
Clean up your cosmetics first, and be sure none are causing this reaction. Most cases will clear up well with a regular regimen of facial hydration, cleansing, and topical therapy.
You can also consult your family physician for recommendations and possibly and acne prescription for your skin. Popular prescriptions include benzyl peroxide mixed with clindamycin topical, with added support from an oral tetracycline until the acne is controlled.
We generally avoid using Accutane products because of side effect concerns.
Difficult cases or cases with scarring may require a dermatologist’s care — better sooner than later. Adult acne is often confused with acne rosacea, but they are really clearly distinct conditions, with differing recommendations for preferred management.
Adult acne responds well to combination topical and oral treatment. Some cases are hormonally induced and will respond to hormone manipulation, adjusted dosing, or birth control pill changes in young women.
Do not overlook adjustments in your diet, stress, and sleep routine, as these all have a major impact on facial acne. Remember that acne is fully treatable, so do not suffer at home without the benefits of modern treatments. Some cases may be amenable to resurfacing techniques or blue-light treatment options.
In any event, with proper selection of treatment, you see the benefit of improved elasticity of your skin with your cleared complexion.
