Question: Our son is in college and he recently told us that he was using a drug called Adderall to help him focus while studying. We are alarmed by this. Is this risky?

Adderall is used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and narcolepsy. Do not be alarmed by its use, but do be sure he is under appropriate physician or psychiatric supervision.

Adderall is an amphetamine stimulant, and many physicians prefer the use of non-stimulant ADHD medications (such as Strattera) that may be safer to use for people of college age. This is a medication that can be abused; some college students have been known to abuse it but say they are using it to improve their concentration.

Be aware also that he will be banned from athletic competition on this drug, and must not use alcohol when taking it.
