When it comes to fats in your blood, you’ve heard of “bad,” or LDL cholesterol, and “good,” or HDL cholesterol.
Now it’s time to add a third blood fat to the list: “Ugly cholesterol,” which researchers say may be the deadliest blood fat of all.
This ugly cholesterol is triglycerides. And while we’ve always known this fat was harmful,
most of the focus has been on lowering LDL cholesterol.
However, in a recent study, researchers from the University of Copenhagen examined the records of 73,000 people, and found those with high triglyceride levels had triple the rate of coronary heart disease — higher even than those with high LDL cholesterol.
Triglycerides, or “remnant cholesterol,” are the type of fats your body produces to store
excess calories. Losing weight and eating a plant-based diet reduces triglyceride levels.
Fish oil supplements are a great way to lower triglycerides. I recommend 2,000 to 4,000 mg of fish oil supplements daily for this purpose.
