We now recognize that stress kills. This has been demonstrated in numerous studies, which indicate that after natural disasters like hurricanes or earthquakes, the rate of heart attacks go up.
But it isn’t only such sudden events that cause stress.
There’s also the chronic stress of everyday concerns such as money, job security, relationships, and even depression and loneliness that can damage your heart’s blood vessels.
Being under stress can also lead to unhealthy habits like drinking too much alcohol, eating the wrong foods, and smoking.
To reduce your stress levels:
• Get 8 to 10 hours of sleep each night
• Exercise, which not only strengthens your heart, but is also a great stress-buster
• Reach out to friends and family; too often when we’re under stress we tend to isolate ourselves
• Turn to the power of prayer through your church or synagogue
