Is Chiropractic Care for You?

Monday, 11 June 2012 10:51 AM EDT

Question: A friend recommended that I see a chiropractor for my back pain, but I know very little about the care such practitioners offer. What do you think?

Dr. Brownstein's Answer:

Chiropractors specialize in the manipulation of the spine. They believe that maintaining the normal structure of the body promotes health and helps heal injuries.

Since my turn to holistic medicine 20 years ago, I have had a particular fondness for chiropractic care. I have met many chiropractors who are very knowledgeable about holistic principles.

However, that is not true of all chiropractors. You may need to investigate how a particular chiropractor practices and see if that suits your need.

Personally, I find chiropractic care very useful for maintaining optimal health. When I am in need of an adjustment, I find that my brain function becomes slightly foggy and I start to have a difficult time sleeping. Sometimes, I have back or neck pain. However, after the adjustment, I feel as if my energy has been turned up.

I have seen many patients significantly improve their health through the use of chiropractic adjustments. In addition, chiropractors are generally more knowledgeable about nutrition and dietary principles than mainstream physicians.

Another type of holistic doctor, an osteopath, may have training in a method called osteopathic manipulation therapy (OMT). This is a form of manual medicine that also works by ensuring that the structure of the body is optimized. Osteopaths who are skilled in OMT therapy can be a valuable part of your healthcare team.
