The wrinkle relaxer Botox can ease nerve pain, a new study finds.
Neuropathy, or nerve pain, is a common chronic and difficult-to-treat condition that is characterized by exaggerated responses to pain.
Botox is made from botulism toxin. It is typically used to relax facial muscles for cosmetic purposes to erase wrinkles.
Researchers at the University of California, San Diego researchers used a form of the toxin known as BoNT-B on mice that suffered from allodynia, a syndrome that results in an exaggerated response to pain due to touch.
The researchers found that applying the BoNT-B locally resulted in pain relief and didn’t alter the animals' normal reflexes or other types of pain perception.
The experiment showed that botulism toxin could be an effective treatment for neuropathy in humans, the researchers said.
