Millions of Americans take medication to treat Type 2 diabetes. But nutritionists note that certain foods can help — and hurt — when it comes to managing the blood-sugar disorder.

In fact, nutrition experts tell The Express five foods should be limited or avoided altogether because they can cause blood sugar spikes that are dangerous for people with diabetes.

The following carbohydrate-rich, processed foods can significantly raise blood sugar levels in Type 1 and 2 diabetes patients:

  • White bread.
  • Pasta.
  • Rice.
  • Soft drinks and fruit juices that are packed full of sugar.
  • Fruit yogurts.

In addition, diabetes specialists say honey, dried fruit, chips, and packaged snack foods can also hike blood sugar.
