Natural Medicine Changes Lives

When I finished medical school and my residency, I was practicing conventional medicine. At that time, my father looked as if he was going to die at any moment.

He had been through two heart attacks, two coronary bypass surgeries, three angioplasties, and he was on 10 different medications to treat a 20-year history of continual angina, congestive heart failure, high cholesterol, and diabetes.

And then I met my first mentor, Dr. Robert Radtke, who taught me the true causes behind my father’s illness:

• Nutrient deficiencies

• Hormonal imbalances

• Smoking cigarettes

• Poor diet

None of the medications my dad was taking addressed any of these underlying causes, so I decided it was time to take a different approach.

Upon measuring his hormone levels, I found that my father was very low in thyroid hormone and testosterone. In fact, his testosterone levels were below detectable limits.

For the heart muscle to function properly, the body requires adequate hormone levels, particularly thyroid and testosterone.

I placed my father on natural versions of testosterone and thyroid. Within seven days, his angina resolved, never to return. Within 30 days, his cholesterol level — which was usually above 300 mg/dL — fell below 200 mg/dL.

That happened without even changing his terrible diet. (Although my father would take what I prescribed, he had no interest in my dietary advice.)

Most important of all, my father no longer looked like he was about to die.

Once I saw how my father responded to hormone treatment, I realized that I wanted to change the way I practiced medicine. I wanted to adopt holistic practices that actually searched for underlying causes of illness and used natural therapies to treat them.
