Sheryl Crow's Brain Tumor: Singer's Medical Battle

Tuesday, 05 Jun 2012 05:46 PM

No stranger to medical misfortune, breast cancer survivor Sheryl Crow is now facing another medical battle, having been diagnosed with a benign brain tumor. The 50-year-old singer, who is currently on a nationwide tour, revealed today in an interview that she has a brain tumor known as a meningioma, which is benign in 90 percent of cases.

It is also not known what causes the tumors, although women who have a history of breast cancer, like Crow, are at higher risk. Sheryl Crow was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2006, just shortly after her break-up with cycling champ Lance Armstrong. After undergoing a minimally invasive surgery and rounds of radiation, the cancer went into remission.

In an interview the singer revealed that she has known about the condition, which can cause memory loss, since last November. "I worried about my memory so much that I went and got an MRI. And I found out I have a brain tumor.” However, she added, “But it's benign, so I don't have to worry about it.” Just last month, while performing in Florida, the singer forgot the words to her hit song, “Soak Up the Sun,” but she laughed it off.

Although they are referred to as brain tumors, meningiomas do not occur in the brain tissue itself, but arise from the linings that cover the brain and spinal cord, which is known as the meninges. These slow-growing tumors constitute about 25 percent of primary brain tumors and most commonly occur in middle-aged women.

Headache and a weakness in a leg or arm are the most common symptoms of meningiomas, although memory loss, seizures, personality changes, headache, dizziness and vision problems can result. In many cases, doctors can monitor the tumor, and treat symptoms with medication, but if symptoms are severe, or the tumor is pressing on brain tissue, it can be removed with surgery or radiation.

According to Crow’s representative, the singer is “healthy and happy.”

Indeed, the latest news on her website, which was posted yesterday, says that pre-sale tickets for her Aug. 9 show at Caesar’s Atlantic City will go on sale tomorrow.
