Why Men Are More Forgetful Than Women

In new research that will come as no surprise to many women, science has confirmed that men — in general — are the more forgetful gender.

The Aston University research reveals that women are better at remembering to perform and fulfill future plans and obligations, Medical Xpress reports.

For the study, 100 men and women were given memory tasks to perform over 15-minute and 24-hour periods. The results showed the women were better at remembering to perform tasks and activities in the future.

"In addition to work responsibilities, women have generally had more responsibilities at home too,” said lead researcher Liana Palermo, M.D., at the Aston School of Life and Health Sciences. “As a consequence of this social role, in daily life women might perform tasks involving prospective memory and planning skills more than men, thus enhancing their performance in remembering to remember."

Activities as simple as remembering to buy milk or put clothes in a washing machine were the kinds of tasks women were better able to remember and undertake than men.

Dr. Palermo suggested that gender differences in memory may be due to differences in hormones or brain structure, but added — to the likely satisfaction of women everywhere — that men might be able to improve their memories by taking a more active domestic role.
