Note to Those Recently Divorced: Be Good to Yourself

How can you ease the anguish that comes with getting a divorce? A new study suggests treating yourself with care and compassion.

Practicing self-compassion, that is being kind to yourself and recognizing common humanity, can promote faster recovery from the emotional toll divorce can take, reports Health Day News.

The study, which will appear in an upcoming issue of the journal Psychological Science, looked at 67 women and 38 men who had been married for more than 13 years and divorced for an average of three to four months. Their average age was 40.

Researchers from the University of Arizona found that participants showing more self-compassion bounced back quicker. Scientists said their work may lead to better coping strategies for the newly divorced and separated.
