Want to live longer? Eat like the Japanese. A study released by the United Kingdom's Office for National Statistics (ONS) found that a Japanese diet high in raw fish, vegetables, and green tea gave women a life expectancy of 86.4 years, four years longer than their English counterparts, who have a life expectancy of 82.8 years. It was the highest life expectancy of all countries examined in the study, says the Independent.
A traditional Japanese diet is comprised of foods lower in calories than Western diets, and meals are generally served in smaller, controlled portions. A Japanese diet is also high in soy, vegetables, and kombu seaweed. According to the Independent, Naomi Moriyama, co-author of Japanese Women Don't Get Old or Fat: Secrets of My Mother's Tokyo Kitchen, says that the average Japanese person eats about 25 percent fewer calories than people who live in the West.
The ONS said there was no reason that other women couldn't achieve the same life expectancy as the Japanese if they change their diets.
