Scientists Hail 'Advanced Anti-Aging Serum'

Monday, 01 December 2014 10:52 AM EST

A revolutionary anti-aging serum called Geneu uses a person's own genetics to create an individualized cream to fight the signs of aging. Clinical trials have shown that Geneu  (pronounced "gene you") reduces wrinkles and lines by about a third in mere weeks.

The treatment was invented not by a mega cosmetics firm, but by British professor Chris Toumazou, the same man who invented the cochlear ear implant, the wireless heart monitor, and the artificial pancreas for Type 1 diabetics.

"Too much collagen will damage the skin," Toumazou told the U.K.'s Telegraph. "You will get collagen overload. Too little and it won't have an impact.

The breakthrough treatment uses a unique microchip developed by Toumazou which allows DNA to be profiled within 30 minutes at a fraction of the previous cost.

Scientists then examine two facets of the genetic code — the level of antioxidants (which protect skin from damaging free radicals), and how fast the body degrades collagen (a protein that keeps the skin plump and free of wrinkles).

The information is then used to create an effective individualized cream that meets each individual's specific needs. "Too much collagen will damage the skin," Toumazou told the U.K.'s Telegraph. "You will get collagen overload. Too little and it won't have an impact."

In addition to collagen, the cream includes vitamins A and C, white mulberry root extract, red baron grass, tripeptidets, and amino acids.

The cream costs, which reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles in only 12 weeks, costs about $850 for a four-week treatment.

Toumazou hopes his unique microchip will be used in the future to make personalized medicine more affordable. It will analyze how patients' bodies process medicines, allowing dosages to be personalized to each individual for maximum benefit while reducing the risk of side effects.
