Getting Over Taboos

Discussions of women’s sexuality used to be taboo, but things began changing with the publication of Masters and Johnson’s Human Sexual Response. These two pioneers documented women’s sexuality and described the human sexual response cycle, which had not been done before.

Since that time, other self-help books have proliferated, many written as early as 1975. These helpful books highlight self-awareness and encourage experimentation between couples.

Betty Dodson is one trailblazer I’ve had the pleasure of meeting. Now almost 90 years old, she still is a fantastic resource and an inspiration for the idea that sex can be fun throughout one’s life.

An artist by training, Dodson’s work encourages women to learn more about their sexuality. It would be impossible for me to describe all of the good advice that Dodson gives, but I will share my favorite Betty Dodson highlight.

Not every sexual experience will be earth-shaking, she notes. By acknowledging more subtle sexual experiences, you are giving yourself permission to acknowledge and learn about letting go of control and express pleasure.
