Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe, reacting to the shooting of Rep. Steve Scalise and others at a baseball practice in Alexandria, said there are "too many guns on the street."
"I think we need to do more to protect all of our citizens," the Democrat said. "I have long advocated — this is not what today is about — but there are too many guns on the street. We lose 93 million Americans a day to gun violence."
The Hill noted he later clarified that 93 Americans, not 93 million, die every day from gun violence.
"I've long talked about this," he said. "Background checks, shutting down gun show loopholes, that's not for today's discussion. But it's not just about politicians. We worry about this every day for all our citizens."
The Hill reported that at one point, he was challenged by a reporter who said: "People are going to criticize that you're bringing up gun control at this time."
According to the website, McAuliffe responded: "I talk about this every single day."
