Americans for Responsible Solutions, a political action committee founded by former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords and her husband, announced on Monday that they would endorse two Republican senators.
Giffords and her husband, retired Navy captain Mark Kelly, made the announcement in a CNN opinion piece.
"In the wake of the tragedy at Sandy Hook, Republican Sens. Pat Toomey and Mark Kirk broke from the gun lobby and supported a bill to help prevent felons, domestic abusers and the dangerously mentally ill from obtaining firearms at gun shows and online," Giffords and Kelly wrote. "This week, they are earning our organization's endorsement."
Toomey and Kirk face strong opponents in their reelection campaigns. In Pennsylvania, Toomey is lagging slightly behind Democrat Katie McGinty, according to Politico. In Illinois, Kirk is losing support from the Republican base for his liberal positions on issues like same-sex marriage and abortion rights.
"He has voted with the Democrats every doggone time, so how in the world is he a Republican? That's what I ask," said Jim Fisher, Illinois Republican who serves as a delegate for Sen. Ted Cruz at the Republican National Convention, to The New York Times.
"If you want to be a Republican, Mark, be a Republican," Fisher continued. "You support pro-choice; you support gay marriage; you support everything that the Republican Party at least in the state of Illinois is against. I don't see how you can call yourself a Republican."
Americans for Responsible Solutions also endorsed two Democratic candidates for Senate: Catherine Cortez Masto, the attorney general of Nevada, and Sen. Michael Bennet of Colorado.
