Republican Sens. Marco Rubio, of Florida, and Pat Toomey, of Pennsylvania, are facing Democratic challengers in races that are too close to call, while Ohio Sen. Rob Portman is ahead in his race by 9 percent, a new Quinnipiac University Swing State poll released Thursday shows.

In Senate race matchups:

  • Florida: Rubio, 48 percent; challenger Democratic Rep. Patrick Murphy, 45 percent. Rubio tops another potential Democratic challenger, Rep. Alan Grayson, by 49-43 percent;
  • Ohio: Portman leads his Democratic challenger, former Gov. Ted Strickland 49 - 40 percent;
  • Pennsylvania: Toomey, 44 percent; Democratic challenger Katie McGinty, 47 percent.

The Senate races are mirroring the presidential race, said Peter Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll.

"At this stage of the campaign, Republican U.S. Senate candidates may be running against their own presidential nominee, Donald Trump, as much as they are against their Democratic opponents," said Brown.

In Florida:

  • Men: Rubio, 56-37 percent;
  • Women: Murphy, 52-39 percent;
  • Republicans: Rubio, 85-5 percent;
  • Independents: Rubio, 51-41 percent;
  • Democrats: Murphy, 88-9 percent;
  • White voters: Rubio, 53-39 percent;
  • Non-white voters: Murphy, 57-37 percent.

In Ohio:

  • Men: Portman, 55-36 percent;
  • Women: Strickland, 44-44 percent;
  • Republicans: Portman, 85-9 percent;
  • Independents: Portman: 55-33 percent;
  • Democrats: Strickland, 88-9 percent;
  • White voters: Portman, 56-34 percent;
  • Non-white voters: Strickland, 66-18 percent.

In Pennsylvania:

  • Men: Toomey, 51-41 percent;
  • Women: McGinty, 52-38 percent;
  • Republicans: Toomey, 85-7 percent;
  • Independents: Toomey, 46-44 percent;
  • Democrats: McGinty, 85-8 percent;
  • White voters: Toomey, 51-42 percent;
  • Non-white voters: McGinty, 71-12 percent.

The poll was conducted from July 30 - Aug. 7 of 1,056 Florida voters, with a 3 point margin of error; 812 Ohio voters, with a 3.4 point margin of error; and 815 Pennsylvania voters with a 3.4 point margin of error.
