Republican nominee Donald Trump's biggest political enemy is himself, according to 45 percent of likely U.S. voters in a Rasmussen Reports poll released Wednesday.

Only 29 percent say Trump's biggest foe is Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, while 20 percent say it is the national media.

Just 5 percent of those surveyed said the GOP's traditional leadership is his worst enemy, despite numerous highly publicized spats and tense relations the real estate mogul has had with many in the Republican establishment.

Trump and Clinton are the most unpopular presidential candidates in recorded American history, with both having as many as 70 percent of those polled disliking them, according to The Washington Post.

The extent to which this is apparently so is shown by the fact that 38 percent of those polled by Rasmussen said Clinton is her own worst political enemy, although 49 percent did say it was her Republican challenger.

Only 9 percent say her biggest rival is the national media and just 2 percent state it is other Democrats.

Other results from the survey include:

  • Among the unaffiliated, 47 percent view Clinton as her own worst enemy, while 44 percent say the same of Trump;
  • Women feel more strongly than men do that Trump's biggest political enemy is himself (48 percent to 42 percent), while men are more likely to feel that way about Clinton (41 percent to 35 percent);
  • Among blacks, 60 percent say Trump is his own worst foe, while only 19 percent of blacks say Clinton is her own biggest enemy;
  • 75 percent of all voters say the media is more interested in creating controversies than reporting where presidential candidates stand on the issues.

The survey of 1,000 likely voters was conducted on August 7-8, which means, of course, that it was completed before Trump's latest controversial remarks in which critics say he was inciting to violence against Clinton.

The margin of sampling error is +/- 3 percentage points, with a 95 percent level of confidence.
