Hillary Clinton won the second presidential candidate debate and is ahead of Donald Trump by 5 points, according to a Politico/Morning Consult poll.
As to who won the debate:
- Clinton: 42 percent;
- Trump: 28 percent.
Thirteen percent of Republicans agreed that Clinton won the debate. However, the poll results showed that eight out of 10 people said the debate did not change their mind about their voting preference.
Breaking down Clinton's five-point lead:
- Clinton: 42 percent;
- Trump: 37 percent;
- Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson: 10 percent;
- Green Party candidate Jill Stein: 3 percent.
In a two-way matchup:
- Clinton: 46 percent;
- Trump: 41 percent.
"In the first poll taken since the debate, voters say Clinton performed better than Trump and we see her lead grow, but not by the same margins it did after the first debate," Morning Consult co-founder Kyle Dropp said.
He pointed out the poll question about whether the Republican Party is united or divided, and said the opinion that the GOP is divided has "skyrocketed."
- 75 percent said the GOP is divided;
- 10 percent said it remains unified.
The survey showed that voters do not have favorable opinions about either candidate.
- Over half said Trump is racist;
- 60 percent said Trump is sexist;
- 63 percent said Clinton is overly secretive;
- 55 percent said she is corrupt;
- 52 percent said she is "extremely liberal."
The poll surveyed 2,001 registered voters, including 1,757 likely voters; the margin of error for both samples is plus or minus 3 percentage points.
