Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton leads Republican candidate Donald Trump in Virginia, according to a new poll from The Washington Post.
Clinton is polling well across the state:
- Statewide: 52 percent;
- D.C. suburbs: 68 percent;
- Northern exurbs: 51 percent;
- Southwest: 32 percent;
- Richmond area: 54 percent;
- Tidewater: 60 percent.
Trump, on the other hand, barely polls above 50 percent in any area:
- Statewide: 38 percent;
- D.C. suburbs: 23 percent;
- Northern exurbs: 44 percent;
- Southwest: 58 percent;
- Richmond area: 37 percent;
- Tidewater: 29 percent.
Clinton's 14-point lead shrinks to 7 points when third-party candidates are added. Despite her advantage, she still polls with high unfavorable ratings, but so does Trump.
Clinton is helped by her running-mate, former Virginia Gov. and current Sen. Tim Kaine, who is still well-known and popular in the state, far more so that Trump's choice Indiana Gov. Mike Pence.
- Clinton favorable: 44 percent;
- Clinton unfavorable: 54 percent;
- Kaine favorable: 54 percent;
- Kaine unfavorable: 37 percent;
- Trump favorable: 32 percent;
- Trump unfavorable: 65 percent;
- Pence favorable: 37 percent;
- Pence unfavorable: 34 percent.
Real Clear Politics' Virginia polls average has Clinton up 10 points, 47.5 percent to Trump's 37.5 percent. With third-party candidates, Clinton's lead increases to 10.3 points.
The Post poll was conducted from Aug. 11-14, with a random sample of 1,002 Virginia adults contacted by phone. Among the group of 888 registered voters, the margin of error is +/- 4 percentage points, among the 707 likely voters, the margin of error is +/- 4.5 points.
