Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton holds a double-digit lead over her Republican opponent Donald Trump in Michigan, according to new poll.
The Free Press/WXYZ-TV poll shows Trump far behind Clinton in Michigan, where less than a month ago he was within 3 points of her in the Great Lakes State.
Including third-party candidates Gary Johnson of the Libertarian Party and Jill Stein of the Green Party, Clinton comes out far ahead of the rest.
- Clinton: 43 percent,
- Trump: 32 percent;
- Johnson: 10 percent;
- Stein: 3 percent;
- Undecided: 12 percent.
"The race is much more settled now no matter what demographic group you're looking at," Bernie Porn, pollster for EPIC-MRA in Lansing, which conducted the survey, told the Free Press. "It's hard to imagine (Clinton losing Michigan) unless Hillary has a health (or some other) issue … I think the perceptions of Trump are pretty baked in."
In mid-September, Clinton's position was far less secure, according to another Free Press poll:
- Clinton: 38 percent,
- Trump: 35 percent;
- Johnson: 10 percent;
- Stein: 4 percent;
- Undecided: 13 percent.
According to the poll, Clinton was overwhelmingly chosen as the victor of the first presidential debate between her and Trump.
- Clinton won: 61 percent;
- Trump won: 12 percent;
- Undecided: 4 percent.
Voters appear to be warming up to Clinton and turning off Trump, going by their unfavorable ratings:
- Clinton unfavorable in Sept.: 56 percent;
- Clinton unfavorable in Oct.: 52 percent;
- Trump unfavorable in Sept.: 63 percent;
- Trump unfavorable in Oct.: 66 percent.
"Given that his unfavorables have gone up, it can't just be the debate. It has to be his overall behavior," Porn added. "All of these things are turning people off… It's significant and it's consistent to what we're seeing in other states."
The poll surveyed 600 likely voters from Oct. 1 - Oct. 3, with a margin of error of +/- 4 percentage points.
