In a hypothetical head-to-head general election matchup, a new
NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll released Monday shows that Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton would easily defeat GOP counterparts Donald Trump and Sen. Ted Cruz, however, she would lose to Sen. Marco Rubio and Ben Carson.
According to the poll, in hypothetical matchups:
- Clinton would beat Trump 50 to 40 percent, 10-point win;
- Clinton would beat Sen. Ted Cruz 48 to 45 percent, 3-point win;
- Clinton would lose to Rubio by 3 points;
- Clinton would lose to Carson by 1 point;
While Clinton has the backing of independent and Hispanic votes to defeat Trump, the same does not ring true against Rubio. According to the
Hill, "pollsters found independent voters would back Rubio over the former secretary of state by a 7-point margin. He would lose the Hispanic vote to Clinton, however, by 23 points. Rubio also takes the highest percentage of female voters among the GOP candidates, but falls short in that demographic to Clinton by 7 points."
Currently, Clinton leads the Democratic primary field by nearly 20 points.
The poll shows:
- Clinton, 56 percent support from Democrats;
- Sen. Bernie Sanders, 37 percent support;
- Former Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley, 4 percent support;
