Donald Trump may be at the top of the polls but John Podesta, Hillary Clinton's campaign chairman says that Ted Cruz is the most likely person to win the GOP nomination.
During a private fundraising event in Berkeley, California, Podesta told a crowd of 90 Democratic donors that Trump would be his second pick for the nomination, followed by Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, a Clinton backer told
Politico.
Further, the unnamed backer said, Podesta said the handicapping was based on his own views, and suggested that the attention Trump has gotten after he proposed barring Muslims from coming into the United States hasn't changed his mind about Cruz.
But still, Podesta confirmed that Clinton's moves to tie Trump to the rest of the Republican party was a political strategy that will likely continue, as the other candidates agree with Trump. Thursday night's event was closed to reporters, but came at a time when Clinton's strategy against Trump took off, and as the campaign's goal of raising $100 million before 2016 edges closer.
Generally, such cash events are kept private, and several have been headlined in recent weeks, including by former figure skater Michelle Kwan, campaign manager Robby Mook, and even former President Bill Clinton, who has proven to be a top draw.
Strategist James Carville has also become an active campaign fundraiser and New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand will host an event in London on Dec. 29, Politico reports. Podesta has hosted some events of his own.
