The New York City Police Department has issued a directive to precincts across all five boroughs, ordering that officers not be sent out alone on assignment.

The New York Daily News says that as of Friday morning, "there are to be no solo assignments citywide."
The memo — hastily issued following the murders of five police officers by snipers in Dallas Thursday night — also says: "[Officers should] remain vigilant at all times while in uniform and remain alert, especially when members of the public approach them.
"Members are to always be aware of any suspicious behavior and to be alert of their surroundings, whether on or off duty … "[They] should avoid creating patterns in their patrols and should appear unpredictable.
Precinct commanders were also told to place two officers outside of every station house until further notice.
