NBC's Pete Williams: 'There Really Isn't' a Clinton Foundation Probe

MSNBC's "MTP Daily"

NBC News chief justice correspondent Pete Williams on Thursday pushed back against reports by Fox News the FBI is investigating the Clinton Foundation.

Appearing on MSNBC's "MTP Daily," Williams was asked by host Chuck Todd about "the status of the FBI investigation into the Clinton Foundation."

"There really isn't one," Williams replied, adding "few want to call it an investigation. That's a term of art in the FBI."

What actually happened, according to Williams' own sources in the bureau, was an initial inquiry was opened based mostly on media reports and on Peter Schweizer's book, "Clinton Cash."

"There were some initial things done in that," Williams said, "but FBI officials tell me there's been virtually no movement on that case for the last several months. So this idea that there are indictments near or something like that, I am told is just not true."

Fox News' Bret Baier opened his program "Special Report" on Wednesday quoting FBI officials as saying a Clinton Foundation probe is a "very high priority."

Baier has stood by his reporting, though he did walk back a statement an indictment was likely in the case.

Williams said his sources disputed that as well as Baier's report it is likely five foreign actors have hacked into Hillary Clinton's private email server she used as secretary of state.

ABC News also reported a source as saying initial "evidence" presented in the case was "not impressive."
