Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton's lead over GOP nominee Donald Trump has narrowed to 6 points in the latest NBC News/Survey Monkey weekly election tracking poll, released on Tuesday.
Last week, Clinton led Trump by 8 points. This week:
- Clinton: 48 percent;
- Trump: 42 percent.
Her lead narrowed even more once Libertarian nominee Gary Johnson and Green Party candidate Jill Stein were added in:
- Clinton, 41 percent;
- Trump, 37 percent;
- Johnson, 11 percent;
- Stein, 5 percent.
The new poll also shows that voters won't likely cast their votes away from their party's candidate, as the numbers for Republicans voting for Trump and the Democrats voting for Clinton are about the same.
However, Trump has made inroads with independents. Last week, Clinton led among independents by 42-32 percent, but his week, she leads by 37-33 percent.
The poll was conducted online from Aug. 22-28 among 24,104 adults who said they are registered voters, and the survey carried a 1 percentage point margin of error.
