Heritage Action, the lobbying arm of the Heritage Foundation, on Tuesday opposed the latest House Republican proposal to end the fiscal stalemate because it would not end Obamacare.
"Unfortunately, the proposed deal will do nothing to stop Obamacare’s massive new entitlements from taking root — radically changing the nature of American healthcare,"
Heritage Action said.
House Republicans are expected to vote Tuesday night on legislation proposed by Speaker John Boehner that would reopen the federal government through Jan. 15 and increase the nation's borrowing authority until Feb. 7.
The proposal also would force members of Congress, the president, vice president and Cabinet to receive their health insurance coverage through Obamacare's exchanges, eliminating any employer contribution or subsidy and thereby overturning an existing exemption in the law.
But the Boehner proposal drops a two-year delay of the planned 2.3 percent tax on medical devices that helps to finance Obamacare. It also does not mention a longstanding GOP demand that the individual mandate for the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act be delayed by one year.
"The proposed plan will do absolutely nothing to help Americans who are negatively impacted by Obamacare," Heritage Action said. "Premiums will continue to skyrocket, cancellation notices will still arrive in the mail, employers will continue reducing hours, and bureaucrats will continue reaching deeper and deeper into our healthcare decisions."
The organization noted that starting Jan. 1, Americans will spend $48 billion on new Obamacare entitlement programs next year alone, with the figure totaling $1.8 trillion through 2023.
"Additionally, health insurance premiums are skyrocketing across America, and employers are shedding jobs and hours," Heritage Action said. "The majority of the American people oppose Obamacare. Even many on the left, including some
powerful unions who were once the law’s strongest supporters, have conceded that it is a train wreck."
Heritage Action said it would score legislators on their vote.
