Wasserman Schultz: 'Dozens' of Countries Back US Attack on Syria

Dozens of countries will back the United States if it attacks Syria as President Barack Obama wants, says Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz.

"From the briefings that I’ve received, there are dozens of countries who are going to stand with the United States, who will engage with us on military action and also that back us up," the House member from Florida told CNN’s “Piers Morgan Live” program Monday.

"In both military and diplomatic and political support, there are dozens of nations who have committed to back us up," she said.

But Wasserman Schultz said she couldn't name the countries, because it was classified information.

A rejection of Obama's war plan by Congress "would be catastrophic for our credibility," she said.

Congressional approval of an attack would "make sure not only that we can protect our allies in the region from the strengthening of [Syrian President Bashar] Assad’s hands, like Israel and Jordan and Turkey, but also that we stand against moral obscenities," Wasserman Schultz said.

An attack also would "make sure that it’s understood that you will receive a severe and certain response from the United States and our allies when you violate international norms, like Assad has," she said.
