The flag of the United States stands for our republic. How public officials treat the flag speaks volumes about their attitudes towards both.
For a time, President Obama refused to wear a flag on his lapel. No explanation was given for why he subsequently changed his mind.
It took Mr. Obama five days to order the flag lowered as a symbol of respect for fallen servicemen murdered by a jihadist in Chattanooga. No explanation for the unseemly delay.
And, when the U.S. and Cuba opened embassies in each other’s capitals on Monday, only Cuba’s flag was hoisted. No explanation for why ours won’t be — until Secretary of State John Kerry visits Havana next month.
Americans typically love and take pride in their flag. Our republic and its symbol deserve better from our leaders.
