Should I get my Breasts Augmented?

Like various types of cosmetic surgery, breast augmentation has also become a trend today.

The breast augmentation procedure involves insertion of saline-filled or silicone-filled implants into the muscular walls of the breast tissue to make them fuller. The implant is inserted by making an incision in the axilla below the areola or the nipple to hide the appearance of the cut.

Breast augmentation has been around for about 40 years. However, like all cosmetic procedures, it carries some associated risks. Statistical data has proven breast augmentation surgery is a temporary procedure that won't last for the patient's lifetime and will have to be redone after 10 years. The psychological effects of breast augmentation are a complete world in themselves. There are a large number of suicides and psychological disorders attributed to women who have opted for breast augmentation.

Most studies have shown that complications may arise within the first three years of saline or silicon implants with the need for removal or re-implantation. This procedure is not only painful but also expensive. Complications may also include wrinkled appearance of the breast, loss of nipple sensation, hardening of the breast, asymmetry of the breasts, intense and painful nipple sensation, breast pain, implant leaks or deflation, implant can be felt, infection, sagging, scarring complications, and hematoma (blood collects around the implant).

Breast implants have also been known to interfere with breast-feeding. Although breast augmentation is considered safe and breast-feeding is encouraged, some procedures like periareolar incisions and subglandular placement are associated with greater difficulties.

Keeping the physical implications of breast augmentation aside, there is an honest need to analyze, “Why breast augmentation?” Breast augmentation is neither an answer nor a solution to low self-esteem or body-image issues. It may also cause problems as one gets older, because breasts with implants do not age naturally. They change shape, become uneven, or grow a second fold on the underside.
