Nintendo Unveils Wii U

Tuesday, 07 June 2011 04:35 PM EDT

On the heels of Apple’s product reveal of the iCloud, Nintendo unveiled its next-generation Wii console and controller, the Wii U, reports The Washington Post.

The most substantial changes to the new Wii are apparent in the system’s exceedingly capable, tablet-like controller. The 6.2 inch touchscreen, microphone, front-facing camera, and stylus for sketching make the controller an interactive device of its own.

The controller can load and run games on its screen independent of any T.V. display. Rapid Internet and video calling capabilities separate the Wii U controller from any of its competitors.

According to MarketWatch, Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata hopes to use the Wii U to both elevate and expand Nintendo’s gaming presence in the public.

“For Nintendo, the goal of innovation is to provide something for everyone. I believe our new platform represents a major step in reaching our goal,” Iwata stated at the Nintendo E3 trade show.
