Suffering from an inability to hear — partially or completely — as a result of disease or infection in one ear or both ears is a condition called hearing loss or hearing impairment.
Facts about the different types of hearing loss are explained below:
1. Hearing loss can be conductive, sensorineural, or a combination of both.
2. Contained in the outer and middle ear are three tiny bones, fluid, and the ear drum. If there is a problem with any of these components, a person may experience conductive hearing loss.
3. Tiny nerves in the inner ear transmit sounds. If these nerves are damaged or diseased, the person loses their hearing either partially or completely. This condition is called sensorineural hearing loss.
4. A head injury, birth defect, infection, tumor, or growth in the canal can be a cause for hearing loss.
5. Hearing loss in children can be caused by ear infection, measles, meningitis, learning disability, jaundice at birth, or genetics.
As hearing impairment can be reversed in some cases, one should not postpone or neglect their ear problem.
