They’ve worked long and hard in service to their country. Now it’s time to find out about the benefits, programs, and employment opportunities available to returning veterans. They are entering a new life and need all the assistance they can get.

These seven top resources for transitioning home will significantly improve their readjustment:

1. Transition counseling
— Vets receive one-on-one counseling before leaving the military through the Transition GPS (goals, plans, success) program, developed by the Department of Defense and the Department of Veterans Affairs. Service representatives provide individual assessments.

7. Veteran assistance groups — Nonprofit service organizations, such as Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), have information on transition and employment services. The VFW website has a page to help match military experience to civilian jobs and other employment resources.
