6 Most Veteran-Friendly States

Whether a military retiree or just recently discharged from military service, many find that veteran-friendly states offer choices on places to live. The opportunities include Veterans Affairs (VA) health facilities, educational benefits, tax relief, and quality of life.

Many states continue to improve their offerings in an attempt to appeal to vets with legislation that improves the lives of those who live there or those who are considering moving there. Americans, in general, want to thank veterans for their service with the best benefits and opportunities available, but some states may provide advantages over others.

Here are six of the most veteran-friendly states:

1. AlaskaAnalysts with WalletHub examined the 50 states and the District of Columbia and ranked Alaska No. 1 for military retirees. The state rated first for its economic environment and placed second for its quality of life. Alaska is also home to the most veterans per capita.

2. Montana — The state ranked first in quality of life and healthcare for veterans in the WalletHub analysis. It rated third overall in the survey. Montana was also second, behind Alaska, for most veterans per capita.

3. South Dakota — The Mount Rushmore State is among the top five states with the Most VA health facilities per 10,000 veterans. It ranked fourth for the most veteran job opportunities and finished second overall in the WalletHub survey.

4. Florida — The Sunshine State was named the most veteran-friendly state in the U.S., according to a report by Florida TaxWatch. Florida has more World War II vets that call the state home than any other. The Florida “G.I. Bill,” passed in 2014, aims to improve services and lives of veterans in the state, reports Florida Politics.

5. Wisconsin — Named among the top 10 military friendly states for discounts, education, and taxes by USMC Life in 2013, Wisconsin ranked No. 1 for store discounts for military personnel and veterans. It also ranked among the top states for education benefits.

6. Wyoming — The state ranked fourth in the top veteran-friendly states by the WalletHub survey. It was second for the most VA health facilities per 10,000 veterans. Veterans also qualify for property tax exemptions if living in the state for at least three years, according to the Wyoming Veterans Commission.
