Benefits and Risks of Udo's Choice Probiotics

By    |   Wednesday, 03 Feb 2016 05:09 PM

The benefits of probiotics are still being explored, but numerous medical studies have shown the significant effect these beneficial bacteria can have. Udo's Choice Probiotics is a brand created by Udo Erasmus, a scientist who spent decades studying the effects of fats and oils on the human body and the best manufacturing techniques for products like probiotics.

On the Udo Erasmus website, the company lists one particular feature of its probiotics that differentiates the product from competitors.

The efficiency of probiotics is affected by the number of bacteria that are in the pill or capsule. According to the Udo website, "The bacterial count found on Udo's Choice Probiotic labels reflects only the number of viable or active bacteria in the product. Any damaged or ineffective bacteria were not included in the count."

ALERT: Weird Gut Bacteria Linked to Digestion, Heart, Obesity, Brain Problems

If the probiotic is kept in a refrigerator, the Udo's website said there's an assumption that 2 percent to 4 percent of the number of viable bacteria in the product will be lost. For example, if there are 30 billion viable cells when the capsule is made, at 12 months there will be 23.5 billion viable cells. However, at room temperature, a 20 percent to 40 percent decrease in bacterial count is expected.

"Udo's Choice Probiotics boast some of the largest bacterial counts available at time of manufacture so that even by the expiry date you will still be getting all the probiotics you need for proper digestion, strong immune function and overall health," the company said.

The company makes six different probiotic blends, something that's important because different strains of bacteria have been shown to be effective for different conditions. Many people misunderstand and take a general probiotic – which isn't bad, but may not be helpful for the particular condition they are trying to help.

Those blends include products for all ages, from infants to seniors, and Hi-Potency Bowel Blend, Super 8 Hi-Potency, and Super 5 Lozenge.

As with most probiotics, there typically are few side effects from taking Udo's Probiotic blends.

"Probiotics are considered safe overall for healthy people; short-term side effects may include mild gas and bloating," according to Berkley Health. "But keep in mind that if they do have physiological effects, these may not always be good effects. Some may, at least in theory, overstimulate the immune system or adversely affect metabolic pathways such as carbohydrate metabolism. If you are immune-compromised, have certain bowel problems or are seriously ill in other ways, avoid probiotics unless your doctor has okayed their use. Probiotics should be used cautiously by pregnant women, infants and young children and never given to premature infants."
