Can Social Networking Sites Destroy My Marriage?

Tuesday, 07 December 2010 12:16 PM EST

Social networking provides ample opportunities for trouble to come knocking at the doorstep of your marriage. The severity of impact of external factors and circumstances always depends on the strength and foundation of your marriage. If the bond of respect and love is strong and the partners are in unison, then the impact of social networking sites may not be so severe in terms of the temptation to look outside your marriage or rekindle passions with old flames.

Many times, reconnecting with ex-lovers can be a positive exercise. It may actually help with the elusive closure you have been looking for; a new friendship with an old lover may even reinforce a harmonious relationship with your current partner. But, this is quite unusual nowadays. More often than not, if the doors of the past open ajar at a slight knock, they bring along an avalanche of unwanted memories, emotions, and actions that may destroy your current matrimonial existence.

The anonymity of online networking can develop potentially dangerous habits of snooping around and may reinforce voyeuristic tendencies. Having more than one online identity in order to flirt or carry on social networking dating is not only detrimental to the psychological health of the individual, but also dangerous for their relationship. Lying and deception breeds nothing but unhappiness.

There are a number of instances of husband and wife sharing things online they would not otherwise in the company of each other. This may breed discontent and mistrust. But, if you enjoy and value your togetherness, then social networking can be a playground for both of you to enjoy yourselves. Whether you are far away or traveling for work, you can keep in touch with your loved one through these sites. Exchanging experiences on each other’s pages can be fun, and may bring you both closer together.

Ultimately, it is always wise to treat social networking with clarity of purpose and to keep communication honest and straightforward. Use common sense while sharing, and above all, know that certain lines can't be crossed.
