Military.com says a rifle as being the best firearm for home defense, particularly a semi-automatic with a 5.56 carbine ammo load. This type of ammunition is ideal for anyone concerned with a bullet going through a wall or injuring an unintended party.

The American Rifleman advises against going for large hunting rifles if you seek home defense: “Although bolt-action hunting rifles may be ideal for taking large game, they make a poor choice for home-defense. These rifles are slow to load, slow to fire, and the high-power cartridges they shoot produce excessive muzzle flash, noise, recoil and are very likely to over-penetrate the target. If you want a rifle for home-defense, then consider a tactical semi-auto or pistol-caliber carbine.”

The American Rifleman further explains that .22 Long Rifles should be avoided as they offer a low level of stopping power: they may fell small game, but will not neutralize a human threat with a single hit. The article continues by recommending M1-Carbine and Ruger Mini-14. Both have with plenty of ammunition and power. These kinds of weapons are ideal as they are easy to shoot, lightweight, and have low recoil.
