South Dakota is becoming a popular state among baby boomers looking for a great place to retire. With its low tax rates, thriving economy, good health care and low cost of living, the attractions are many to those living on a fixed income.

The Mount Rushmore State has many popular spots in which to retire, offering much to the active adult looking for a comfortable living environment. Here are four of them.

1. Pierre

The state capital is a popular city among retirees. The city is located on the Missouri River and offers many beautiful walks, hikes, and great fishing spots for active retirees, MarketWatch noted. Surrounding the statehouse in the city is a 115-acre park with natural lakes, stunning gardens and many walking trails. Outside of the city are the prairies of the Fort Pierre National Grasslands with animals such as grouse, antelope, and coyote to hunt. Shopping in the city is good and there are many restaurants for fine dining.

2. Hot Springs

For those retirees looking for a quieter life, the small town of Hot Springs offers plenty. Even though it has a population of just over 3,700, it has a vibrant life with a golf course, a hospital, a busy library, grocery stores, and even a woolly Mammoth museum, MarketWatch noted. The hot springs of the town’s title still have the power of healing and are a relaxing way to spend a few hours. At the gateway to the southern Black Hills, Hot Springs gives easy access to beautiful spots such as Mount Rushmore and Custer State Park.

3. Rapid City

This city of more than 67,000 people offers great living to the retiree looking for the mixture of outdoor and urban living. With easy access to the Badlands and the Black Hills, there are many hiking trails and hunting spots for those still indulging in an active life. The city also hosts a symphony orchestra for the culture seeker along with theater houses and many museums. For a city of its size, it also has a lot of senior centers, offering group activities to their members.

4. Aberdeen

Situated in northwest South Dakota, this town of over 27,000 offers much to those in retirement. There are theaters, golf courses, tennis courts and ice rinks for active adults looking for a variety of activities. The town also has two hospitals and Wells Fargo Auto Finance giving employment opportunities to those still seeking work in retirement, TopRetirements.com noted.
