Outdoor lovers in South Dakota have plenty of recreational activities to pursue, including gun ranges for pistols, rifles, shotguns and bows.

Here are five spots for firearms and pistol practice in the state of South Dakota:

1. Smoking Gun Indoor Range & Training Center: Smoking Gun boasts of being the only indoor public shooting facility in Western South Dakota. Located in Rapid City, non-members can use the range at hourly rates. Firearm sales, rentals and instruction are available.

"Owners and managers have an obvious passion for firearms and safe handling, as well as having fun with them and are extremely knowledgeable," writes a reviewer on Facebook

2. Buffalo Chip Shooting Complex: Located in Sturgis, the complex includes more than 250 acres of space to accommodate a variety of shooting sports on seven ranges for pistols, rifles, shotguns and archery. As part of a campground, the shooting complex has a rifle range with distances up to 400 yards, a two-bay pistol range and a 10-station sporting clay area.

3. Big Sioux Rifle and Pistol Club: Located in Valley Springs, the updated ranges are from distances of 50 to 200 yards with 10 lanes for pistols and 18 lanes for rifles. There are day rates for non-members. The club features weather shelters, a clubhouse and range officers.

4.Buffalo Butte Ranch: Located in Gregory, this ranch has a gun range, rifle range and long-range shooting for visitors who want to practice before hunting. The range is 25 yards for pistol use. The popular rifle range has distances of 100, 200 and 300 yards. The long range has a distance of 1,100 yards with clay shooting.

5. Outdoor Adventure Center of South Dakota: Pistol and rifle enthusiasts, as well as first-timers, can enjoy the large facility in the Dakota Nature Park, located in Brookings. An Olympic-length archery range accommodates 40 shooters. Classrooms and conference rooms are included at the center to improve skills.
