The Association of Mature American Citizens (AMAC) is a conservative seniors’ organization that began in 2007 and has grown to include over one million members.

Because of its conservative philosophies, AMAC does not support the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act and its ties to improper Medicare and Medicaid expenditures.

According to its website, what sets AMAC apart from other seniors’ organizations is its focus on “protecting the interests of America’s seniors” and its devotion to the “traditional American values of faith, family, and freedom.”

AMAC also claims to offer an alternative perspective on problem-solving for issues pertaining to seniors and how to oppose “runaway taxes, excessive government involvement in our day-to-day lives, and the erosion of accountability at all levels of government.”

The Wall Street Journal notes that AMAC, as well as other conservative-leaning advocacy groups that have been springing up in the last few years, is posing a growing threat to the powerhouse advocacy group, American Association of Retired Persons (AARP). These alternative groups criticize AARP because they believe that it has veered too far to the political left.

When AARP announced its support for the Affordable Care Act (also known as ObamaCare) in 2008, AMAC saw its membership boost from 40,000 to its current 1.1 million, the Wall Street Journal reports. AARP, on the other hand, lost approximately 300,000 of its members in large part because of its support for ObamaCare.

On its website, AMAC declares that it does not support ObamaCare or Medicaid because it believes that it is a “serious mistake to have the Federal government interfere and dictate how medical care is provided in this country.”

Instead, AMAC endorses the implementation of “minor” improvements to the current healthcare system and the adherence to the previous system of state regulations and competitive free enterprise.
