Tuesday, 05 July 2011 12:14 PM EDT

A motorcyclist participating in a protest against helmet laws in upstate New York died Saturday after flipping over his handlebars and hitting his head on the pavement.

New York State Troopers reported that the accident occurred on Saturday afternoon in Onondaga, N.Y. Philip A. Contos, 55, of Parish, N.Y., reportedly hit the brakes and caused his 1983 Harley Davidson to fishtail and spin out of control. He was traveling with a group of bikers protesting New York helmet laws by riding without protective headgear. Contos was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Troopers told Syracuse’s The Post Standard that Contos would have likely survived if he had been wearing a helmet.
