Takeru Kobayashi, a professional speed eater, crushed the hot dog eating world record by eating 69 hot dogs in just 10 minutes this 4th of July, reports
TMZ.
But it wasn’t during the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Championship held at Coney Island each Independence Day that Kobayashi accomplished this feat. Ironically, Kobayashi gave his stellar performance on a Manhattan rooftop just miles away from the official Nathan’s Championship.
Kobayashi was prohibited from competing in the Nathan’s Championship after he refused to sign a contract with Major League Eating. So, he protested by hosting (and documenting) his own speed eating contest. In doing so, he crushed the winner of the Nathan’s Championship, Joey Chestnut, who won the official title by eating 62 hot dogs in 10 minutes.
Because Kobayashi’s record was not official, Joey Chestnut still holds the supreme title.
